Someting Borrowed and Blue

Even though I am planning on wearing my Mom's veil and my Grandmother's brooch, I still have a couple more Something Old's to add to the mix. The good news: they also fall under Something Borrowed and Something Blue.

Up first, my Something Borrowed. Last time Mama Peep was up visiting, she handed me a handkerchief. It was her Mother's and it's delicate and matches the wedding colors perfectly!!

Up next, is my old and blue.

A few months before I graduated college my Mom called and said that my sister wanted my Grandmother's amethyst ring. I remembered the ring, but knew that it meant more to her than to me. To make it fair, my mom mentioned that I could have a blue ring with some funky pearls on it. I totally forgot about the conversation. Come graduation day, I was surprised with the most beautiful blue ring I had ever seen. My mom had the ring cleaned and the pearls removed; no one knew how gorgeous the ring really was. For five years, I wore the ring everyday on my left middle finger- I stopped wearing it when I got my engagement ring. But I knew when I took it off that I had to wear it on my wedding day.

And because I am apparently obsessed with taking pictures of rings. Here's my something blue, my Grandmother's Aquamarine ring:

I am so excited that I will have something to wear from both my Grandmothers, who are no longer with us, on our big day.

So have you figured out your something old, blue, borrowed, and new?

Ring Check

Right after Mr. Peep and I got engaged, we jetted off to Hawaii for a vacation with his family. This left me in a very odd position- all I wanted to do was show off my new sparkling engagement ring, but ocean and new ring just don't mix. Not to mention, as soon as we landed, we found out that our fax to get the ring insured did not go through.

So, I found myself in Hawaii with an uninsured engagement ring that was still a bit too big.I pictured our Hawaiian vacation ruined, and me spending the rest of my vacation searching through the sand with this guy:

After a bit of a debate with the Mr., we decided it was ok to wear the ring pool side, etc. But if we were to go to the beach or in the water, I'd have to put on what we termed - a stunt ring. (I at least wanted people to know that I was engaged!!)

This is when Mr. Peep invented ring checks. He'd yell out Ring Check, make me stop whatever I was doing and show him my finger with the ring on it.

Thankfully, we were able to get the ring insured while we were on vacation, and when we left Hawaii I put my sparkler back on and the stunt ring back in my jewelry case.

Fast forward 13 months, I am on the bus on my way to work and Mr. Peep calls me. He asks if I forgot something at home. I had left my mittens that I had gotten over the holidays at home because the weather had warmed up, but that wasn't why he was calling. He promptly let me know that he found my engagement ring on the bathroom counter in case I missed it later that day. Big OPPS.

The whole day I felt odd. I couldn't just flash my sparkling ring that yells 'sorry buddy this girls taken' to the guy in the elevator who was checking me out, well, at least I thought he was checking me it. No one noticed that I didn't have my ring on at work, but I felt naked without it.

I ran home cleaned my ring and put it back on my finger where it will remain for the rest of my days.

But wait, there is a point to this long drawn out story. This weekend I noticed that one of the prongs seemed to be snagging on everything. After further inspection, both Mr. Peep and I realized that it needs to be fixed.

So once again, my sparkling ring was put away, and I put on the standby stunt ring. My week has been crazy busy, so unfortunately getting my ring fixed has been put off until this weekend.

But here's the thing. I miss my ring, but my plain silver band stunt ring seems to do the trick. I realized this week that while I love my ring, I love it because it sits on my left ring finger. You could say that I am just into the status symbol it provides, but really, I just love that I get to show to the world how much I love Mr. Peep and that he is my one and only!!

It has made me truly appreciate that it's not the size of the sparkler, but the reason behind it. Maybe I am just figuring this out late in the game, but it's better late than never, right?

Oh, and Mr. Peep still yells across the room every now and then- Ring Check.

Have you ever forgotten your ring? Or had to wear a stunt ring?

Adding some organic spice to the wedding industry.

This is my adventure in planning a modern organic wedding without the sequins and puffiness. All on a budget; in one of the most expensive cities in the US.

I have already been planning my wedding for eleven months (my God that has flown by) so I have a lot to share. I guess I'll dig right in and give the engagement story:

Here we are at brunch the morning he proposed.

I wish I could say I had no idea it was coming, but alas, Mr. Spice couldn't quite hold in the excitement. So on a Sunday morning in December, while still in bed, Mr. Spice proposed. As soon as I realized what was going on I made him get down on one knee. The dog was so confused he immediately attacked Mr. Spice, and by attack, I mean slobbered kisses all over his face. Once the dog approved, well, I don't remember much after that other than crying and shouting out YES!!

The rest of the morning was spent in an excited haze. I can't say I surprised anyone when I called with the news- Mr. Spice had clued everyone in on the plan by asking my ENTIRE family if they approved! Honestly, that surprised me the most! He had the whole day (and next day) planned with the help of Sister Sugar. He had even called my boss and asked for the day off on Monday. Later she told me that she felt like he was asking her permission for us to get married- so of course she gave me the day!!

Since that fateful day last December I have been falling down the wedding planning rabbit hole and hoping to hold on to what really matters- us!!

Hope you enjoy the adventure with me, I have already done a lot of planning, but I have a lot to go. Coming soon, the non-wedding wedding, the guest list cut in half, a 17-month-long engagement (say what, I am not getting any younger??), five months of looking for a venue cut down to three posts, and a New York Times Interview!!

So join me on the ride to make our wedding our own by adding bit of sugar and spice.

I'll leave you with the picture that you really want to see: the RING. A cushion cut, yellow sapphire. Mr. Spice did good!!!
(Please don't focus on my finger hair- I took this pic on the day of our engagement before I even knew what a wedding blog was!)

So tell me, did you know what a wedding blog was before you were engaged?? Did you know about your engagement and was it a low key affair?
